- 1. Can I apply for CAS fellowships before I come to work at IHEP, or while I am working outside China?

Yes. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) offers a package of international fellowships, collectively called the “CAS President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI)”, to support international scientists and postgraduate students to work and study at CAS institutions and strengthen their scientific collaboration with CAS researchers. The PIFI program is available for four categories of international researchers and students: distinguished scientists, visiting scientists, postdoctoral researchers and international PhD students. For more detailed information please visit the page (http://english.bic.cas.cn/AF/Fe/) for yearly-updated information.

- 2. Can I apply for talent positions while working at IHEP?

Yes, you can.

- 3. How long does it take to get a Foreign Expert Certificate (FEC) and what is the maximum length of time I can wait to apply for the extension of my residence permit after I get the FEC?

Foreign Expert Certificates have been replaced by a new work permit. IHEP staff will help you prepare the necessary documents and apply for the work permit. Please consult the local secretary and the staff at the International Office for more detailed information.

- 4. Can I write my progress report in English?

Yes, you can. You must write a form every year from 1 to 4 pages about your work at IHEP. You will explain the context of the work, the results, and any problems faced. You will be asked to present your work in a 5--15 minute presentation, depending on your position (postdoc, assistant professor), to 5 IHEP professors. Usually, this is held in June. For post-doctoral positions, when you leave, you have to write a report (minimum 50 pages) describing your work at IHEP.

- 5. Can I change the bank where my salary is paid (ICBC) to another Chinese or international bank?

Yes, you can change your salary card to another bank. However, the IHEP account is an ICBC account. If you choose a card from other bank, the ICBC bank will charge you a transaction fee when distributing your monthly salary, and the fee will be automatically deducted from the budget from which your salary is paid. Therefore, we recommend that you open an account at ICBC.

- 6. IHEP has two housing compounds. Can I exchange my IHEP rented apartment at one of them with others in the other compound?

It depends on the availability of the house, and whether there is someone who is willing to exchange with you.
