The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), used to be known as the Institute of Modern Physics,CAS, which was established in 1950,was founded on the basis of the First Department of the Institute of Atomic Energy in 1973. Now IHEP is staffed with 1145 people, including 842 physicists and engineers. Among the 221 tutors there are 11 academicians and 110 doctoral tutors, and there are over 440 postgraduate students, 60 post-doctors and 400 visiting students. Dr.Chen Hesheng is the current director and the former directors were Dr.Zhang Wenyu, Dr.Ye Minghan, Dr.Fang Shouxian and Dr.Zheng Zhipeng.

The featured subjects: As the biggest and comprehensive institute, IHEP relied on the large scientific equipments to carry out basic research and applied basic research, with integrated approaches and many research fields. The main research facilities at IHEP are Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC), Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII), Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF), and Yangbajing International Cosmic Ray Observatory, the constructing research projects are the Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment and China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), and Hard X-Ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) and Beijing Advanced Photon Source(BAPS). IHEP also participated in lunar exploration project and manned space program; The major technology includes particle accelerator, synchrotron radiation, Space Detection, particle detection, nuclear analysis techniques, nuclear imaging, computer, Power Electronics, Micro-electronics, automation, Cryogenic and Refrigeration Technique, microwave and superconductors, precision machinery and etc. The major research areas of IHEP are high energy physics, theoretical physics, astrophysics and space astronomy, condensed matter physics, accelerator physics, inorganic chemistry, biology, nanometer materials and Nano-drugs, environmental science. Apart from the fields mentioned above, IHEP also engaged in many international projects, which provide abundant foreign exchanging opportunities.

Academic achievements: IHEP has got over 200 awards from 1978. The followings are important: BEPC (National Outstanding Prize for Progress in Science and Technology), Beijing 35MeV Proton Accelerator (National First Prize for Progress in Science and Technology), Anti-Sigma Negative Hyperons Discovery (National First Prize for Natural Science), Accurate Measurement of τ-lepton Quality (National Second Prize for Natural Science), BFEL Device (National Second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology), ψ(2S) particles and charmonium physics experimental research (National Second Prize for Natural Science), 2-5GeV region electron annihilation Hadron reaction section (r) of accurately measuring (National Second Prize for Natural Science), soft x-ray reflectometer device and its applications (STIA second award), and etc. IHEP also obtained many patents and published many SCI indexed Papers, which are among the top 10 of all national institutions.

The enrollment: IHEP is one of the first batch of Post-Doctor stations, grant with doctor and master, and is the training point of physics. There are six doctor degree programs of science including Theoretical Physics, Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics, Inorganic Chemistry and Bioinorganic Chemistry; two doctor degree programs of engineer including Nuclear Technology & Application and Computer Applied Technology; five full-time professional master degree programs of Computer Technology, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Material Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering. There are also two post-doctoral stations including Physics and Nuclear Science & Technology.

Tutors: IHEP advocated "unity, truth, innovation and dedication". There are a large number of high level researchers acting in the international frontier subjects, who are in close cooperation and Communication with the foreign counterparts. Among the over 110 Ph.D tutors and over 110 Master tutors, there are 10 academicians and many members of “the Hundred Talents Program” and a national program for “Introducing Outstanding Young Scientists Abroad”. The proportion of tutors and postgraduates is 1: 2, so students could get good guidance.

Environment for Learning and living: Sharing the same campus with the Graduate University of CAS (GUCAS), IHEP is located in Yuquanlu, which is beautiful and with all kinds of sports facilities. The dormitories of GUCAS and IHEP provide students with comfortable living conditions. Students do not need to pay the tuition and could enjoy bursaries and scholarships. Convenient Internet access, modern library and wide domestic and international cooperation are available at the campus. Particularly, several large research projects provide a good basis of studying, going abroad and hunting a job for postgraduates.

Warmly welcome to apply for postgraduates at IHEP.
